Chapter 32

Mason was gratefully wrapping his hands around a large cup of hot milky coffee as he waited patiently for Baxter to return from the counter of the busy London café Reg had taken them to, and join the rest of them at the table. The foreboding London clouds had once again opened and were covering the ancient city in another non-stop deluge. He was grateful to be inside, out of the wind and rain.

Waiting for Baxter, Mason shot Alicia a glance and even tried a smile. He got something that probably would not be described as a smile by most people given back to him, but he knew the hardnosed woman from Chicago well enough to understand this was some attempt on her part to return his gesture, and definitely as good as he could hope for.

“How’s life treating you?” He asked Alicia.

She shrugged.

Holly, who was sitting beside them, was ignoring them totally. Since she had collected the second clue from Marcus Beausire’s secret entry into the Witherington book, also written in anagram form by the looks of it, she was busy at work, once again with a pencil and her notebook rather than her smartphone. Baxter was still standing at the counter, waiting longer than the rest of them as he had opted to try a traditional British café breakfast fry-up.

“Just a shrug, eh?” Mason said.

“It's not too bad,” Alicia said at last. “My latest job was a pain in the ass though.”

“What do you mean your latest job was a pain in the ass?”

“You really don’t care.”

“I do care or I wouldn’t have asked,” Mason said. This was true. Everyone at the table knew he was a man of few words.

“Fine,” Alicia said, taking a second to sip some coffee and gather her thoughts. As she considered her reply, her eyes crossed out into the street and she followed a red double-decker bus as it chugged its way through the rain on the road outside. An army of people marched up and down both pavements, all carrying umbrellas and gave the scene outside a strange, almost comforting effect. Mason thought it looked like some kind of French impressionist painting, especially after having spent so long in the dry dusty hills of Portugal.

“I’ve just been – when I say ‘I’, I mean me and my team – babysitting Siren.”

Holly’s eyes flipped up from her notebook. “As in the Siren?”

“Yeah, the Siren,” Alicia said.

Mason thought Alicia looked embarrassed by what she had just said, but even though Holly seemed to know what she was talking about, Mason was absolutely none the wiser.

“What do you mean you’re looking after a siren?” Mason asked. “Like the kind of thing they put on top of police cars?”

Holly laughed and went back to her notes.

Alicia shook her head, and this time a smile almost broke out on her face. “No, Siren – it’s not a thing it’s a person, but she kind of behaves like a thing. She’s literally the world’s biggest pop star, Mason.
